Guns Save Lives

What the FBI and Media Don’t Tell You: How Many Lives Guns Really Save

When most people in the San Francisco Bay Area think of carrying a gun, they’ve already been influenced by Hollywood and the news. TV shows and movies regularly show armed citizens as reckless vigilantes who only make situations worse. The same message is repeated by politicians and commentators: “Leave it to the police.”

But the truth is, reality tells a different story—one that matters to anyone pursuing CCW training in Contra Costa, Alameda, Sonoma, or San Francisco.

The Hidden Reality of Armed Citizens

Critics often dismiss the idea of a “good guy with a gun.” They argue it’s just a fantasy, but the data says otherwise. Research by Dr. John Lott, author of More Guns, Less Crime, shows that criminals avoid striking in places where they believe civilians may be armed.

Even more important—many crimes are stopped without a shot ever being fired. In self-defense encounters, simply drawing a legally carried firearm is often enough to send criminals fleeing.

Unfortunately, these real-life defensive gun uses rarely make the evening news. They aren’t tracked in official FBI statistics, and as a result, most people in California never hear about them.

Why Don’t You Hear These Stories?

The FBI itself admits its “active shooter” reports don’t include all incidents where citizens intervene. That means their numbers underreport cases where concealed carriers prevented mass casualties.

Here are just a few examples that never became national headlines:

  • South Carolina (2016): One week after the Pulse nightclub tragedy, another armed attacker opened fire at a crowded nightclub. A concealed carrier stopped him—preventing a second massacre.

  • Titusville, Florida (2018): A man opened fire during a school event at a public park. An armed bystander stopped him before anyone was killed. Police said, “The bystander saved a lot of lives.”

  • Arizona (2022): A mass shooter attacked a family party, seriously wounding Raul Mendez. Despite being shot in the head, Mendez returned fire and ended the attack—saving his wife, daughters, and a dozen others.

These are real events. They weren’t on TV dramas or Hollywood scripts. But because they don’t fit the narrative, they’re often buried.

Why This Matters for California CCW Holders

If you live in Contra Costa County, Alameda County, San Francisco, Marin, or Sonoma, you know how challenging it is to secure your CCW license. The process is long, detailed, and highly regulated. But once you earn that license, the responsibility—and the potential impact—are huge.

At 2A Firearms Academy, we train responsible citizens to carry confidently and lawfully. Our CCW courses go beyond the basics—you’ll learn:

  • When the law allows you to defend yourself

  • How to de-escalate before shots are ever fired

  • Real-world skills to protect yourself and your family under stress

We’ve seen firsthand that responsible training saves lives. The difference between chaos and survival often comes down to preparation.

The Global Lesson

History shows that when governments ban guns, crime doesn’t disappear—it rises. Criminals remain armed while law-abiding citizens are left vulnerable. That’s why CCW training in the Bay Area is so important. It’s not about fantasy—it’s about being ready when seconds count.

The Bottom Line

The FBI may undercount defensive gun uses, and the media may ignore them, but the truth is simple: armed citizens save lives every day.
